'Passionate People' is a monthly newsletter from the
desk of Paula Smith, Speaker, Author, Trainer and Coach.
I
have decided that I don’t want to be normal. For those of you
who know me well may agree I have achieved my goal. The normal I
mean is the same as everyone else doing the same old things
day after day. Have you ever seen the movie Ground Hog Day?
Imagine
doing and living the same day every day. You awaken one day and
realise that you have been eating the same porridge for
breakfast for 20 years and you cannot every remember changing
your toothpaste brand. You wake and go to sleep at the same time
each day and you drive to the office the same way every day.
Imagine every day also achieving exactly the same results. If
this makes you really happy then please don't change a thing.
I was talking to my loveable husband some time ago about what
I really want out of life. My comment was “I want a remarkable
life” With him in it of course.
It doesn’t mean wildly rich, or wanting to be famous or
anything else so ostentatious. Just remarkable. I would like to
do as many interesting things with my life as possible. I want
to try new things every day, taste new foods, visit new places,
meet interesting people and just never have a day exactly the
same. To me this will be a remarkable life.
I want stories to tell and experiences to share with my
children, lessons I have learnt to share with my clients. I want
to be the first to explore, I want to be the last to visit, I
want to stand out from the crowd, I want to stand up and roar
about what I believe in. I want to stretch boundaries and
question the facts. I want to do things a little differently. I
don’t want much do I?
I just don’t want to be normal. Normal is boring. I would
like “Remarkable” please.
What is your normal? Are you bored with your normal?
What could you do differently tomorrow just to add a bit of
spice to your life? (Healthy Spice) Fly a kite early in the
morning with your husband before work? How about a bit of
chocolate with breakfast? (Okay maybe that’s not so healthy but
it will taste good). It could be as simple as take the
scenic route to work just for a change.
For those who want to grow their business, how about changing
the way you are marketing or change the way your whole business
answers the phone for the day. Have you ever ridden your bike to
work? What about having the next board meeting at SciTech?
I know normal is sometimes safe and we all like to feel safe
from time to time. Sometimes normal can even mean less stress.
If we don’t change our normal from time to time. We can only
ever expect the same results.
A very close friend once said to me “Life is not about the
breath we take, it is about the moments that take our breath
away”.
Remarkable!

Who are your tribe? We all love
to network and meet new people. We like to belong or fit in
somewhere and enjoy the conversations and thoughts of the
people who turn up. At National Speakers we call it “Our
Tribe”.
Well my tribe just gave me the time of my life at
the recent annual convention of the National Speakers
Association of Australia.
Professional speakers from across
Australia and around the world came together to learn,
celebrate and meet other likeminded souls at the beginning of
this month in Melbourne.
It is one of my favourite events
of the year. I always come back brimming with exciting ideas
to implement and a renewed enthusiasm for my business of 24
years.
This year was even more special as I was awarded my
CSP (Certified Speaking Professional) the highest designation
for professional speakers internationally.
Now I am not
one to get nervous before a speech. This time however, imagine
Me, a speaker who speaks on speaking, speaking to 300
professional speakers while I was being presented an award for
speaking. No pressure at all.
See if you can see the sweat
in the photo.
It is superb when clients acknowledge your
efforts but when your peers also acknowledge your expertise it
is an honour. Thank you so much to the WA crowd for making my
night so special.

Presentation skills are a must have skill in today’s
competitive business world.
Tip Number
13.
After watching so many world-class presenters at the recent
National Speakers convention, I thought my tip this month
would be my three takeaways from convention this year.
- Bring more of yourself and your stories into your
presentations (this will help the audience to relate to you).
- Believe very strongly that you have something valuable to
offer your audience (If you have something to share that will
make a difference to others – do stand up and stand out).
- The incredible power of non-verbal communication (Amazing stuff,
did you know that just a few very simple non verbal hand
gestures will make you appear more intelligent and credible?).
I never stop learning from watching amazing presenters. Every
presenter I watch I learn something from. As easy as it is to
watch hundreds of them on Youtube.
Nothing will ever replace the experience of being present.

Midvale Pack and Send I recently had to present some
regional workshops and needed to get a large amount of resources
sent up to my location. Boxes of training materials, text books,
photocopies, files etc.. I walked into Midvale Pack and Send
for the first time to see how efficient and cost effective this
type of service would be. It was so easy. They removed the big
boxes out of the car for me, re-packed them, sealed them up and
off they went. The boxes arrived within two days at my hotel
ready and waiting for me. They even phoned me to let me know they
had safely arrived. They were just delightfully helpful people.
We are moving house too at the moment so I popped in again
to see if they sold packing boxes and within two minutes they
had been packed in my car and I was on my way. Tash and
Kieran are just great. Wouldn’t life be great if every time we
walked into a business to do business we got exactly what we
wanted and with a smile.
Pack and Send is at Unit 2, 5 Farrall Rd, Midvale Ph: 9274
3053
Apparently they will pack and send anything anywhere.
